The first meal of the New Year, what better way to begin other then by partaking in a yummy yum cha meal with 7 people. We decided to go to Dragon Palace Chinese Restaurant in Northbridge and we thought to meet there at 11am, not too early but before the lunch time rush of midday, but of course we forgot one simple fact - there is no such thing as avoiding a lunch time rush in a dim sum restaurant.
So we wait, for just a little over 30 minutes with our little raffle ticket - D38....so hungry by this stage because there was a lack of breakfast in wait for the delightful morsels.
Finally we are seated and try and order jasmine tea and a bottle of cold water - what a debacle that was - waiting for 20 minutes plus asking 3 people in total to bring us the tea. Admittedly it did come to us and it was hot tea and cold water so we couldn't ask for much more could we?
The food came out thick and fast, all those little carts whizzing around on the floor - deep fried squid tentacles, steamed BBQ pork buns, prawn dumplings and almost a never ending supply of other tantalising dishes. Wave your hand, make eye contact and then point to the items, rinse and then repeat. Only 4 items per basket, this causes some problems when you have 7 people - so we order two of everything. Such a good idea, a whole mouthful of prawn and chive dumpling and prawn rice flour rolls. Finally finished the main course, now onto desserts - what to choose, do we go sago or coconut jelly, custard egg tarts or mango jelly....or how about all of them and then we can sample each individual sweet, sugary dessert.
Finally we are done, and ready for a food coma and for 7 people it only cost approximately $180 - wow we were completely full and there was no room for more food.
Overall, the customer service was somewhat lacking - I mean is it so hard to deliver a pot of tea or a bottle of cold water without having to be asked 3 times? Sometimes it was difficult to flag down the ladies who were in control of the food items but all in all they were willing to help with flagging down others to arrange for chilli oil and drinks etc so I cannot fault them, and although they may not have understood the questions being asked (i.e. what's in that one?) they gave it a good shot :) I have been to Dragon Palace many a time before, but this was the first time I was really disappointed - perhaps it was the fact that it was on New Years day so some can be forgiven I suppose.
The food, as usual was AMAZING! Words cannot describe how impressed I was as usual with the quality of the food as well as the quantity - so many different options to choose from and not stone cold like in some restaurants.
Would I go there again: Most definitely
Would I recommend it to others: YES!!
Price: Total value for money, roughly worked out to $26 per person and that was drinks and food.
